On Life this Month

DSCN0792Whew, it’s been quite the month, guys.

We’ve been working away, doing some local-ish traveling, enjoying lots of fall-y things, watching too many TV shows, and making small updates to the apartment along the way. Get ready for lots of words.

I kicked off the month with a trip to Pittsburgh for Duquesne’s homecoming. Despite being a frigid first weekend of October, it was great to spend time with some besties, meet the beautiful new daughter of a wonderful friend, and trek around campus a bit. So many good memories from my four years there. The only downside to the weekend was that it was only two days. If only the real world didn’t exist and I could just spend a week trolling around Pittsburgh doing absolutely nothing at all.

I’m also smack in the middle of “campaign” (not political) season for my job, so the work weeks have been a bit of a blur with lots of moving around the city to different government buildings. On the plus side, nothing makes me feel more like an independent lady than lugging my display board and suitcase filled with premiums up a busy non-working Metro escalator, taking my heels along for the ride. And thank you sir, but I don’t need assistance. Strong women unite.

J’s job is keeping him busy as well. I went to a late-night homecoming pep rally with him one Friday evening and it was awesome to see him in his element interacting with some of the students and his coworkers. However, I was called “Mrs. K” on more than one occasion by his kids, and I’m pretty sure my brow earned a new wrinkle every time.

In addition to some work and a little travel here and there, we’ve been doing our best to check things off our Fall Bucket List. Earlier this month we got to enjoy an Oktoberfest party with my sorority alumnae chapter, and this past weekend we carved our pumpkins and had a little beer tasting of our own, with a side of pumpkin cheesecake from Wegman’s. Carrie supervised from the screen door, which has become her favorite spot in the apartment thanks to the cool fall breeze and lots of leaves flying by for her to “hunt.” We also spent the weekend catching up on “How to Get Away with Murder.” I’m not quite sure how I did it, but somehow I’ve gotten J to watch a Shonda Rhimes show with me.

Things have been coming along on getting our apartment together. In the past I’ve been in a rush to just purchase things to make a space feel more complete, but I’m trying to really take my time this go-around. Luckily, our apartment is small so it isn’t like we have rooms and rooms to fill (only three, actually), but our tastes are constantly evolving and what we picked even two years ago doesn’t fully fit our style any more. Knowing this, we are trying to focus on quality pieces and purchasing things we think will have a longer shelf life in this and future homes. We got the base of our gallery wall hung, and I finally decided on curtains for the bedroom. True story, we have been hanging beach towels in our bedroom windows at night because we didn’t have curtains and the cat would try to climb the blinds if we left them down while we slept. Needless to say, I’m excited for our curtain rod to come in this week so we can hang the drapes and sheers and act like some-what civilized adults. It’s ok to judge us, I do too.

That’s about life for us this month. What’s new with you? Done anything fun and seasonal or tackled a home project? Enjoy the rest of the week! xx

Fit for a Friday

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a great week! It’s been a busy one around here, but as of this evening J and I will officially be in vacation-mode for the next nine days. Can.not.wait. To kick off your weekend, here’s Fit for a Friday – a compilation of musings, findings, and favorite links I’ve stumbled across in the past week.

This picture story has gone absolutely viral over the last week, so you’ve probably already seen it. In the chance that you haven’t – click with caution. While sitting on the couch the other evening J was scrolling through his phone and says, “Oh this is really sad, but it’s nice – you should read it.” Within seconds, I was SOBBING. Mind you, I cry pretty easily, but this story is exactly what it tells you it is, “beautiful and utterly heartbreaking.”

I listened to the kids play off in the distance. And thought about my two babies at home. I loved protecting them.{via}

Oh my gahh. As if I didn’t already love Uber enough! Please make this a regular thing!

How cute are those white flowers in the colored water? So fun!

This piece spoke to me perfectly. I have been so many women already in my short time, and I know I will continue to evolve into many more women to come. I’ve been rebellious, I’ve been restless, I’ve been a good partner, and I’ve even been a bad partner. I’ve been a daughter, a sister, a friend to many, and a used-to-be friend to as many more. All I can hope is that in my roles to come I choose to be kind, loving as a wife, and content with whoever I am. Definitely a nice read for a woman at any stage of her life.

Well friends, that’s all I’ve got for today. Things will be quiet around here over the next week while I enjoy some much needed R&R, so have a great week and I’ll catch up with you soon! xx

Fit for a Friday

Happy Friday, friends! Also, Happy West Virginia Day, and happy almost-first day of summer! How’s everyone’s week been? J headed home to his parent’s last night so he could play in an annual golf fundraiser today, so I’ve been holding it down single [cat]lady style. If the rain holds off tomorrow morning my plan is to check the Annapolis Farmer’s Market off my Summer Bucket List, and maybe even get a little baking done on Saturday before J gets home. This is the only weekend until September that doesn’t have something on the calendar, so I plan to happily enjoy the downtime. To help you kick off your weekend, here’s this week’s Fit for a Friday – a compilation of musings, findings, and favorite links I’ve stumbled across in the past week.

A great little piece discussing some of the awesome things to do in my hometown, Charleston, WV. As I mentioned in this week’s Mid-Week Peaks, J and I are headed there next weekend to catch the last leg of FestivALL and visit family and friends I haven’t seen since Christmas. Take me home, Country Roads.

It wouldn’t be a Fit for a Friday post if I didn’t share a cute animal story. The fact that the zoo adopted the cat and is letting it happily roam in the habitat makes my heart smile. PS – the author notes this story doesn’t seem to have any real source or date, so please keep that in mind! The video is super adorable, though.

How stinkin’ cute is this? I actually stumbled on to this link through Sugar & Cloth’s equally cute DIY // Polka Dot Floppy Hat post. I went to high school with Ashley, the author behind Sugar & Cloth, and she always posts really fun and colorful DIY’s and sweet treats. Now excuse me while I go find a floppy hat to paint.

I swoon. J and I dream of a little brownstone with original hardwoods, a touch of outdoor patio space, and reserved parking. The dream lives on.

That about wraps it up for me. Cheers to the weekend! xx

Happy Friday! And perhaps more importantly, Happy National Doughnut Day! Anyone partake in a particularly delicious doughnut (donut?) today?

It’s been a busy week around our little nest. I had an evening work commitment Wednesday, and J flew off to Florida yesterday for a four-day conference. Since J will be away, my BFF Krista is coming to keep me company! I’m really looking forward to our weekend. Since I left Pittsburgh three years ago, the majority (if not all…?) of our visits have been centered around some life event – bridal and baby showers, weddings, bachelorette parties, etc. As awesome as those events are, it will be nice to just have a weekend together to catch up without the distractions.

But anyway, let’s get on with the weekend! Here’s Fit for a Friday – a compilation of musings, findings, and favorite links I’ve stumbled across in the past week.

Um, Nom. I’m a sucker for a good scone, but these aren’t just scones, these are S’MORE SCONES. I can’t think of anything better to pair with my Sunday coffee.

I love going through all the great entries in “The 10th Annual Smartest Coolest Homes” Contest. The spaces are all so unique and fun, and I have been getting great inspiration. One concept I can totally get behind: less is more. I like that small spaces require you to get rid of the clutter and truly appreciate everything you have. Less is more. Except when it comes to shoes. And cupcakes. In those cases, more is always better.

On the same note of Apartment Therapy’s Small Cool contest, this article from The Washington Post gives some awesome ways to utilize console tables in a small home. I also love the use of the chest of drawers next to the sofa as shown in the picture below. Storage is key in a little nest, and I could definitely see us copying this in the future.

  • and lastly, this little inspiration reminder

Enjoy the weekend, friends! xx
